FORT PIERCE — Lighthouse Foundation head Larry Lee Jr. said a simple hug or kiss daily from a parent can make all the difference in the world to a child growing up in today's society.
During the foundation's first family unity day festival in Fort Pierce over the weekend, Lee promoted family bonding and provided tips for parents to get more involved with their children.
About The Lighthouse Foundation
In November of 2004 Larry Lee, Jr. had a vision to create a movement. His vision was to develop a radio show that promoted people and organizations that are making a positive impact on improving the lives of those living on the Treasure Coast. He organized a group of friends and purchased a radio station. As part of the programming of his newly acquired station he created his own Friday morning radio show entitled “Good news Friday/ Pay it Forward” which later became known as “Pay it Forward Friday.”The show aired every Friday morning from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on the radio station and 104.5 FM WFLM "THE FLAME".
While growing up in Fort Pierce Larry always had a passion for volunteering. He moved back to Fort Pierce after teaching school for three years in Sylvania, Georgia.Upon returning to his hometown he got involved with The St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, the Exchange club, The Boys and Girls Club, and The United Way of St. Lucie County. He often visited local nursing homes and also worked with other not-for-profit organizations. It was while working with these organizations that he decided he wanted to develop his own 501-C3 foundation.
This idea stayed on Larry’s mind for several years but the death of his father Larry Lee, Sr. is what motivated him to move forward.Prior to his father’s passing, Larry observed the high cost of his father’s medicine and that inspired him to make senior citizens one of the major focuses of his foundation. The other focus would be children.Having been an educator he knew first hand their needs as well.Originally Larry was going to call it the Pay It Forward Foundation, but after speaking to his CPA and close friend Chris Fogal he was convinced the name should be the Lighthouse Foundation. He felt the name was perfect because a lighthouse shows people the way and felt that is what he wanted to do.His lighthouse foundation would show people how to pay it forward.
On September 20, 2010 his vision became a reality. He organized the Lighthouse Foundation and Larry Lee, Jr. was now able to use his blessings and the help of his friends to help two groups of people that he had always wanted to help, Senior Citizens and Children.
In the first four months of existence, the Lighthouse Foundation helped purchase 300 pairs of shoes for underprivileged children, donated $3400.00 to 34 Senior Citizens to help with their prescriptions, donated bikes at Christmas to local Children, and donated $500.00 to each of the sponsored organizations. Those organizations are The United Way, Big Brothers & Big sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs, Council on Aging of St Lucie County, Raw Dawgs youth corps, Project Rock Youth Program, Community Outreach Youth Organization, Avenue D boys choir, Castle for the prevention of child abuse, and the Sunrise Theatre Foundation. Most of the funds are raised on his Pay it Forward Friday radio show.Every dollar raised through the Lighthouse foundation is paid forward. This foundation could not do what it has done and is doing without the help of hundreds of donors and volunteers.
Larry and his board of directors would like to say thank you to all that are and all that will become a part of the pay it forward movement. Please join the movement.
